Course Description:
MA Islamic Studies offers you the chance to study the Qur'an, the Hadith literature and the Islamic sciences which have grown around them such as Theology, Jurisprudence (fiqh), Islamic history, Philosophy and Mysticism. You will also be able to take modules that will acquaint you with current issues facing Islam and Muslims around the world, such as the impact of modernity and Islam and modern politics.
By the end of the course, you will have a broad understanding of Islamic thought, including major eras, figures and concepts throughout Islamic history. You will have also received training and experience in research skills and critical and interpretative methods relevant to both this and other disciplines.

Entry Requirements:

  • A BA, BSc or equivalent degree (If degrees do not correspond with the programme, the applicants will have to pass foundation courses unless they can prove they have enough knowledge in the field through an interview with one of the tutors).
  • Students for whom English is not a first language must have at least IELTS 6.5, TOFEL 573 (paper based), TOFEL 90 (IBT) or equivalent qualifications.

Course Structure:
To obtain your Masters degree, you will be required to complete three core modules and three optional modules as well as a dissertation. If you are studying for a post-graduate diploma, you will not have to submit a dissertation.
If you are studying full-time, you must complete 3 modules each semester. If you are
studying part-time, you must complete 4 modules in the first and 2 in the second year.

Optional modules:
You can choose up to three optional modules. Your tutors will give you advice to help you match your choices to your individual interests. The optional courses are offered in both semesters. The following is a complete list of the optional modules (please note that these are subject to availability):

Dissertation:
If you are a Masters student, you must complete a dissertation of 12,000-15,000 words. This will be the main piece of work in which you will demonstrate the extent of knowledge that you have achieved. You will be assigned a supervisor to help you prepare for and develop your topic.
